Custom Database Engine as a Data Warehouse Alternative
5 min read
Data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, etc.) are built for analytical queries. When does a custom engine make sense as an alternative or complement?
Ad-hoc analytics, complex SQL, many users and reports. Warehouses are optimized for that. Use them unless you hit cost limits or need real-time answers on a fixed schema.
- Real-time dashboards – Pre-aggregated or fixed queries that must answer in milliseconds. A custom engine can hold materialized views or rollups and serve them with low latency; the warehouse stays for ad-hoc.
- Ingest and stream – A custom engine as the landing or buffer before the warehouse. High write throughput, optional retention, then batch or stream into the warehouse.
- Narrow, high-QPS analytics – One or a few query shapes (e.g. “revenue by product last 24h”) at very high QPS. A purpose-built layer can be cheaper than scaling the warehouse for that alone.
Most setups keep the warehouse for flexibility and add a custom engine for real-time or hot analytical path. At Hendoi we build custom database engines (VeloxDB) for USA, Canada, and Bengaluru. Contact us for a free quote.
Frequently asked questions
When you need real-time answers on a fixed set of queries, very high ingest throughput before the warehouse, or a narrow analytical workload at high QPS that’s cheaper on a purpose-built layer.
No. Use a custom engine for the real-time or hot path and keep the warehouse for ad-hoc analytics and reporting. Sync or stream data between them.
