Building an AI Agent That Talks to Your Internal Database

7 min read

An AI agent that can query your internal database can answer questions, draft reports, and trigger workflows—but only if you build it safely and with clear boundaries.

Don’t hand the LLM a connection string or raw SQL. Instead, expose a controlled layer: an API or an MCP server that offers “tools” like “get_orders_last_7_days” or “list_open_tickets.” The agent calls these tools; your backend runs parameterized queries and returns only what’s needed. You control schema, filters, and limits.

Think in terms of questions your users ask: “What’s our top product by revenue?” or “Which customers haven’t logged in in 30 days?” Each tool can map to one or a few such questions, with clear parameters (e.g. date range, tenant ID). This keeps the surface small and auditable.

Use the same permissions you’d use for a dashboard: role-based access, row-level security if needed, and read-only by default. Log every tool call and consider rate limits. Add guardrails so the agent can’t be prompted to bypass rules (e.g. “ignore the filter”) and validate inputs before running any query.

Start with a few high-value tools and a small group of users. See what they ask and how often the agent gets it right. Add tools or refine prompts based on feedback. Scale only after safety and accuracy are solid.

In-house works if you have backend and data experience and time to design the tool layer. For production-grade agents that talk to internal DBs in the USA, Canada, or Bengaluru, Hendoi Technologies can design and build the agent and the safe data layer. Get a free quote.
