Does My B2B Product Need an SDK: A Checklist for Non Technical Founders
5 min read
You’re a non-technical founder with a B2B product. People keep mentioning “SDK.” Do you need one? Use this checklist.
An SDK is a code library that makes it easier for developers to integrate with your product. Instead of them writing raw API calls from scratch, they install your package and use pre-built functions. So: “Do we need an SDK?” really means “Do we need to make it easier for developers to integrate with us?”
☐ Your buyers or power users are developers (e.g. dev tools, APIs, platforms). ☐ You already have an API and see support tickets or long integration cycles. ☐ Competitors or similar products offer an SDK and it’s a buying criterion. ☐ You’re doing enterprise or partner deals and “easy integration” comes up in every sale. ☐ You want to grow a developer community or ecosystem around your product.
If you tick several of these, an SDK is usually worth it. Start with one language (often the one your best customers use—e.g. TypeScript for web, Python for data).
☐ Your users are mostly non-technical and integrate via UI or CSV. ☐ Your API is still changing a lot (you’d be updating the SDK constantly). ☐ You have no API yet—build the API first, then consider an SDK. ☐ You’re pre-product-market fit and every dollar goes to core product. In those cases, a great API and docs might be enough for now. Revisit the SDK when the checklist above starts to apply.
If you decided “yes”: write down who will use it (e.g. “our customers’ backend teams using Python”) and what they need (e.g. “auth, read/write for resources X and Y”). Share that with a dev agency that has built SDKs before (e.g. Hendoi in Bengaluru). They’ll propose scope, timeline, and cost. You don’t need to code—you need to define the “who” and “what.” Hendoi Technologies builds SDKs for B2B products and works with non-technical founders in the US, Canada, and Bengaluru.
