How to Hire a Remote Indian Development Team: Red Flags and Green Flags
7 min read
US and Canada companies hire remote Indian development teams for cost and talent. The outcome depends on how you choose and work with them. This guide lists red flags and green flags so you pick a team you can trust.
- Clear process – They describe kickoff, sprints, demos, and handover. They do not say "we'll figure it out."
- References – They give real clients you can contact, preferably in the USA or Canada. You can verify the work.
- Portfolio – Live apps or sites you can try. They can explain their role and the tech stack.
- Communication – They respond on time, write clear English, and ask good questions about your product and users.
- Single point of contact – One person (e.g. project lead) for updates and decisions. No playing telephone with five people.
- Scope and quote – They ask for requirements and give a fixed or capped quote with milestones. No vague "we'll see."
- Willingness to say no – They tell you when something is out of scope or not a good fit. That is professionalism.
❌ No references or portfolio – Or only vague "we've worked with many clients." ❌ Poor or slow communication – Delayed replies, unclear answers, or broken English with no improvement. ❌ No clear process – "We're flexible" with no structure. You need sprints, demos, and a handover plan. ❌ Unrealistic promises – "We'll build your entire product in 4 weeks for $2,000." ❌ No technical lead – Only junior devs with no one accountable for architecture and quality. ❌ Unwillingness to fix bugs – Or "that's extra." Bugs in delivered scope should be fixed before handover. ❌ Vague contract – No clear scope, milestones, or IP ownership. Get it in writing.
Ask for 1–2 reference calls. Check their GitHub or ask for a small technical task. Do a paid pilot (e.g. one feature or 2 weeks) before committing to a full project. See how they communicate and deliver.
