How to Find a Developer Who Actually Understands Model Context Protocol in 2026

6 min read

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is still niche. Many developers have not built with it. Here’s how to find one who actually understands it—and will ship.

They should know what tools and resources are, how an MCP server is discovered and invoked by a client (e.g. Claude), and how to implement one in TypeScript or Python using the official SDKs. Not “we can learn it” but “we’ve built one” or “we’ve integrated with one.” Ask for a short description of a project and the role they played.

Agencies that list MCP or “AI infrastructure” on their site are a good start. So are dev shops that already build for LLM products (agents, tool-calling). Ask in your network: “Who built your MCP server?” Referrals from other US or Canada startups often lead to teams in Bengaluru or elsewhere that already deliver.

  • Have you built or maintained an MCP server? What did it expose (tools, resources)?
  • How did you handle auth, errors, and rate limits?
  • Can you walk me through how a client discovers and calls a tool?
  • If they hesitate or give vague answers, dig deeper or look elsewhere.
  • No concrete example (repo, design doc, or description).
  • Confusing MCP with “we do APIs” or “we do chatbots” without protocol knowledge.
  • Unwilling to do a small paid pilot (e.g. one or two tools) before a full project.
  • Clear explanation of the protocol and their implementation.
  • Willingness to share a non-confidential sample or architecture.
  • Experience with your stack (Node, Python) and your client (e.g. Claude).
