How to Get a Mobile App Built in India Without Getting Burned

US and Canada founders often get mobile apps built in India to save cost. Some get burned; many get a great result. Here’s how to be in the second group.

Write down: core features (MVP only to start), platforms (iOS, Android, or both via React Native/Flutter), and what “done” looks like (e.g. “Submit to App Store, pass review”). Include non-goals so the agency doesn’t gold-plate. A clear brief gets you comparable quotes and reduces “we didn’t agree on that” later.

Ask for 2–3 shipped apps (names or links). Check that they’ve built something similar (e.g. B2C, dashboards, or whatever you need). “We do mobile” isn’t enough; you want “we’ve shipped apps that are live in the stores.” Prefer agencies that work with US/Canada clients: they’re used to async communication and clear contracts. Bengaluru has many; check reviews and ask for a reference call.

Fixed or capped price for a defined scope, or time-and-materials with a cap. Milestones with sign-off (e.g. design approval, alpha, beta, store submission). Code and design ownership in your name from day one (or on final payment). Clear “out of scope” and how changes are quoted. Don’t pay 100% upfront; tie payments to milestones.

Weekly or biweekly demos, not “we’ll show you at the end.” Test builds early. If something is wrong, flag it in writing so there’s a record. Good agencies want feedback; if they go quiet or resist demos, that’s a red flag.

Who fixes bugs in the first 30–90 days? Who handles store updates and OS changes? Agree on post-launch support (included or retainer) before you sign.
