How to Know If an Indian Dev Agency Is Reliable Before You Pay Them
6 min read
You’re about to pay an Indian dev agency. How do you know they’re reliable? Check these before you sign or send money.
Ask for 2–3 projects similar to yours (web app, mobile app, API, etc.). Get names, links, or a short case study. If they can’t show anything concrete (“confidential” is okay, but they should describe the project and their role), that’s a red flag. Check the live app or site if they share it; see if it’s real and working.
Reliable agencies have a clear process: discovery, scope, milestones, demos, and handover. They’ll explain it on the first call. They respond to email or Slack within a day (or set expectations: “we respond within 24 hours”). They’re happy to do a short paid pilot before a big project. If they’re vague on process or slow to reply before you’ve paid, imagine after.
Ask for one or two client references (name, company, or “can we email them?”). Contact them. Ask: Did they deliver on time and scope? How was communication? Would you use them again? One good reference is worth more than a fancy website.
Reliable agencies use a contract: scope, milestones, payment schedule, and code/design ownership. They don’t ask for 100% upfront. Typical: 20–30% to start, rest on milestones. If they refuse a contract or insist on full payment before work, walk away.
- No concrete past work to show.
- No clear process or unwillingness to do a pilot.
- No references or refusal to share any.
- Pressure to pay quickly or skip the contract.
- Promises that sound too good (“we’ll build everything in 2 weeks for $2K”).
