Node.js vs Python for Your Startup Backend: What to Tell Your Dev Agency

5 min read

You’re hiring a dev agency to build your startup’s backend. Should you ask for Node.js or Python? Here’s what to tell them so they can recommend well.

  • What the product does (e.g. real-time dashboard, API for mobile app, data pipeline).
  • Whether you already have a frontend or mobile app and in what stack (e.g. React, React Native).
  • Whether you need heavy data/ML work (e.g. recommendations, batch jobs).
  • Whether your future hires or you prefer a certain language.
  • With that, they can suggest Node.js or Python (or both for different services) and explain why.

You want one language (JavaScript/TypeScript) across frontend and backend, or you need high concurrency and real-time (e.g. WebSockets, event-driven APIs). Huge ecosystem, fast to ship. Many agencies in India and the US are strong in Node. Tell the agency if you’re already on React/Next or plan to share types with the frontend.

You need data processing, ML, or heavy scripting; or your team or ecosystem is Python-first. Great for APIs that sit in front of data science or internal tools. Slightly different ecosystem than Node (Django, FastAPI, etc.). Tell the agency if you have data scientists or existing Python code.

If you’re agnostic, say: “We need a backend that does X and Y. We don’t have a language preference. What do you recommend and why?” A good agency will pick one, justify it, and stick to it consistently. Don’t force a stack they’re weak in. Hendoi Technologies builds backends in both Node.js and Python for US, Canada, and Bengaluru startups. We’ll recommend based on your product and team. Free consultation.
