Postfix vs Mailcow: Which Private Mail Server Is Right for You?

6 min read

Two common paths for private mail are a classic stack built around Postfix or an all-in-one like Mailcow. Here’s how they differ and when to pick which.

Postfix is a widely used MTA (mail transfer agent). You combine it with Dovecot (IMAP/POP3), a webmail (e.g. Roundcube), and optionally anti-spam/anti-virus. You have full control over every component and can tune for high volume or special requirements. The downside: more moving parts, more configuration, and you own the integration and updates.

Mailcow bundles Postfix, Dovecot, webmail (SOGo), anti-spam (rspamd), and admin UI in a Docker-based setup. You get a working server faster, with a single place to manage domains, users, and aliases. Good for small to mid-size teams that want “private mail” without building the stack from scratch. Less flexible than a hand-rolled Postfix setup; you follow Mailcow’s layout and upgrade path.

Choose a Postfix-centric stack when you need custom routing, high throughput, or integration with existing systems (e.g. custom auth, logging, or storage). You (or your team) should be comfortable maintaining multiple services and configs.

Choose Mailcow when you want to get to “we have our own mail” quickly, don’t need heavy customization, and are fine with Docker and Mailcow’s defaults. Ideal for small businesses and teams that prefer one coherent system over maximum flexibility.
