E-commerce is the one category where the build price is often the least important number. A store that costs ₹2 lakh to build but bleeds 3% on every transaction and loses customers at checkout is far more expensive than one costing ₹5 lakh that converts well and charges 2%.

So this guide covers both: what stores cost to build in Bengaluru, and the running economics that determine whether yours is actually profitable.

Build cost by platform

ApproachBuild costMonthly platform costBest suited to
Shopify (custom theme)₹80,000 – ₹2,50,000₹2,500 – ₹25,000D2C brands, fast launch
WooCommerce₹1,00,000 – ₹3,50,000₹1,500 – ₹8,000Content-heavy stores, tight budgets
Custom build₹3,00,000 – ₹12,00,000₹3,000 – ₹30,000Unusual workflows, ERP integration

The running costs that decide profitability

Model these before you choose a platform, not after. For a store doing ₹10 lakh a month in revenue:

~₹20,000
Payment gateway fees at 2%
₹60–90
Shipping, per order
15–30%
Typical RTO rate on COD

Return-to-origin is the silent killer of Indian e-commerce margins. Cash-on-delivery orders are refused at the door at rates of 15–30% in many categories, and you pay shipping both ways. Building COD confirmation via WhatsApp or OTP into your checkout is one of the highest-ROI features you can commission.

Features that actually move revenue

Not all features earn their build cost. Based on what consistently pays back for Indian stores:

Worth building early

  • Fast, single-page checkout with UPI
  • COD confirmation via WhatsApp or OTP
  • Abandoned-cart recovery messages
  • Accurate stock and delivery estimates
  • Fast product search with filters
  • Order tracking that customers can self-serve

Usually can wait

  • Loyalty and points programmes
  • AR or 3D product previews
  • Multi-currency (before you have export demand)
  • Elaborate wishlist and social features
  • Custom recommendation engines
  • Native mobile app (a fast site usually beats it early)

The checkout is where money is lost

Indian cart abandonment averages well above 65%. Most of that is decided in the final two screens. The fixes are unglamorous and effective:

  1. Do not force account creation Guest checkout alone routinely lifts conversion by double-digit percentages.
  2. Put UPI first It is the dominant Indian payment method and has the lowest friction. Burying it under card fields costs you orders.
  3. Show the final price early Shipping charges appearing at the last step is the single most cited reason for abandonment.
  4. Autofill address from pincode Reduces typing on mobile, where most of your traffic is, and reduces delivery failures.
  5. Keep it one page Every additional step loses a measurable share of buyers.

GST and compliance

If you are GST-registered, this is not optional and is much cheaper to build in from the start:

  • Correct HSN codes on every product
  • CGST/SGST split for intra-state, IGST for inter-state orders
  • Sequential, non-repeating invoice numbering
  • Downloadable tax invoices for customers
  • Reports that reconcile against GSTR filings

Retrofitting GST-compliant invoicing into a live store is one of the most expensive "small" changes in Indian e-commerce. Specify it on day one.

A realistic recommendation

If you are launching a D2C brand in Bengaluru and are not yet at scale, start on Shopify with a custom-designed theme — roughly ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,00,000 — and put your remaining budget into product photography and paid acquisition. Revisit a custom build once transaction fees genuinely exceed what custom development would cost to maintain.

If you already run an offline business with an ERP or complex inventory, a custom build usually pays for itself faster, because the integration is where the real operational savings are.

Frequently asked questions

Shopify suits most brands under roughly ₹50 lakh annual online revenue — it is fast to launch and the monthly fee is cheaper than maintaining custom code. Custom becomes worthwhile when transaction fees exceed development cost, when you need unusual workflows, or when you must integrate deeply with an existing ERP.
Most Indian gateways charge roughly 2% on UPI and domestic cards, and 3% or more on international cards. UPI is often free or near-free on some plans. On thin margins this matters: at 2%, a store doing ₹10 lakh a month pays about ₹20,000 monthly in fees alone.
A Shopify or WooCommerce store with custom design takes 4–7 weeks. A fully custom store with ERP integration and bespoke workflows takes 3–5 months. Product photography and content preparation frequently take longer than the development itself.
If you are GST-registered, your invoices must be GST-compliant, showing correct HSN codes, tax splits (CGST/SGST or IGST), and sequential invoice numbers. This is straightforward to build in but must be specified up front — retrofitting compliant invoicing after launch is genuinely painful.
